QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

You have questions. We have answers.

Everything you want to know about OMHC — who we serve, how to join, finding care, getting involved, and more.

About OMHC

Who we are &
what we do

  • Our Mental Health Collective (OMHC) is a Michigan-based nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to culturally affirming mental health care for BIPOC communities. We connect people seeking care with therapists who share their lived experience, provide professional development for clinicians of color, and build infrastructure that centers healing rooted in culture — not the systems that have historically excluded us.

  • We serve two interconnected groups: community members seeking culturally rooted mental health care, and mental health clinicians — including students, recent graduates, solo practitioners, and group practice owners — who are building careers in service of BIPOC communities. Our work is designed so that supporting clinicians and supporting communities strengthens both simultaneously.

  • No. OMHC is a collective — we don't provide direct therapy services. We connect people with vetted providers in our network, support clinicians through professional development, and create the systems and community needed for BIPOC-centered mental health care to thrive across Michigan. Think of us as the infrastructure, not the service itself.

  • Yes. Our Mental Health Collective is a registered nonprofit organization. Our work is driven by mission, not margin. Everything we do is aimed at expanding access, dismantling barriers in the mental health system, and building a future where every BIPOC community member in Michigan can access care that honors who they are.

Finding Care

For community
members

  • Browse our provider directory to find culturally affirming therapists in our network. You can filter by specialty, location, insurance accepted, and other preferences to find the right fit. Every clinician in our directory has been vetted and shares our commitment to BIPOC-centered care.

  • Many providers in our network do accept insurance, though accepted plans vary by clinician. Each provider's listing clearly states their accepted insurance and payment options, including whether they offer a sliding scale fee. We encourage you to reach out directly to any provider to discuss what works for you before booking.

  • We believe cost should never be a barrier to healing. Several providers in our network offer sliding scale fees based on income. Beyond individual therapy, OMHC also curates community programming, resources, and peer spaces designed to support wellbeing at no cost. Follow our events page and subscribe to our newsletter to stay connected with free offerings.

  • The difference is community and intentionality. OMHC is not a marketplace — it's a collective. Every provider is vetted and values-aligned. We're not matching people to available slots; we're building a network rooted in shared commitment to BIPOC healing. When you find a therapist through OMHC, you're connecting with someone who is part of this ecosystem — not just listed in a database.

For Clinicians

Joining the collective
as a provider

  • Licensed mental health clinicians and supervised pre-licensed clinicians who share our commitment to serving BIPOC communities are welcome to apply. This includes therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and others across the care spectrum. Our community is built for those who see culturally rooted care not as a specialty, but as a calling.

  • Members receive a listing in our provider directory, access to professional development events and training, peer consultation opportunities, and connection to a community of clinicians who understand the unique rewards and challenges of this work. You'll also be invited to participate in our committees and collaborative initiatives — shaping OMHC alongside us, not just alongside us in spirit.

  • We offer membership tiers designed to meet clinicians where they are financially — including reduced options for students and pre-licensed practitioners. We believe clinicians building toward licensure deserve community too, not just after they've made it. Visit our Join page for current membership details and pricing.

  • Absolutely — and we'd love to have you. OMHC has specific pathways for students and recent graduates because we believe in meeting clinicians at the very beginning of their careers, not waiting until they're fully licensed. The earlier you're in community, the stronger your foundation. Apply through our join page and select the pathway that fits your career stage.

Events & Programs

Gatherings,
learning & community

  • We host a mix of professional development workshops, community wellness gatherings, peer consultation groups, panel discussions, and social events — all designed to nourish both the clinical mind and the whole person. Our programming reflects our belief that healing is communal, and that clinicians need community to sustain the work they do.

  • The best ways to stay in the loop are subscribing to our newsletter and following us on Instagram. Our newsletter includes event announcements, community updates, and resources delivered with intention. You can also check our events page anytime for what's upcoming.

  • Some events are free and open to the community, while others are designed for OMHC members or may carry a registration fee. Every event page clearly states who it's for and any associated costs. We are committed to offering meaningful programming at accessible price points, and we regularly host community-facing events at no cost.

Getting Involved

Committees,
community & partnership

  • We have four active committees: the Latine Committee, Advocacy Committee, Men's Ambassador Committee, and Community Engagement Committee. Each plays a distinct role in expanding OMHC's reach and deepening our impact across specific communities. To get involved, join the collective and let us know which committee aligns with your passions when you apply.

  • Community members, advocates, and allies are a vital part of our ecosystem too. While committee membership is currently organized around clinician membership, we believe in the power of community partnership. If you're passionate about mental health equity and want to explore ways to support OMHC's mission, reach out to us — there's often more room than you'd expect.

  • Yes. We welcome partnerships with organizations, companies, and institutions that are genuinely committed to mental health equity for BIPOC communities. Whether you're looking to support our programming, collaborate on an initiative, or connect your community to our network — we'd love to explore what's possible. Start a conversation with us.

Crisis Support

If you need
immediate help

  • No. OMHC does not provide emergency or crisis response services, and our team is not equipped to respond to mental health crises in real time. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please reach out to a crisis resource in your area. We encourage exploring non-carceral options — warmlines and peer support lines — as alternatives to systems that can cause harm.

  • For immediate peer emotional support, we encourage reaching out to warmlines in your area — these are staffed by people with lived mental health experience and do not dispatch emergency services. You can search for "mental health warmline Michigan" to find local options. We do not recommend calling services that may involve police response unless you are actively in danger of physical harm.

We see you. You are not alone.
